How does it work?

Firstly, dry needling reduces pain by the simple insertion of the needle. This stimulates a rush of natural pain killers called serotonin. Serotonin actively reduces your pain, therefore enabling you to function more effectively.

Secondly, by inserting a needle into a trigger point in a muscle, the muscle will twitch and the trigger point releases immediately. One the trigger point is released, blood flow into the area delivering necessary nutrients for muscle function is re-established and the muscle begins to behave normally again. This is an extremely effective way to release tight muscle bands. The local muscle will both contract and lengthen better, allowing you to have more power and better flexibility after needling. This also reduces local muscle pain which was caused by the trigger point.

Which medical aids cover dry needling?
Medical aids in South Africa all share a billing code system with recognised treatment codes. Dry needling has its own code, and will be paid for by your medical aid if they would normally pay for physiotherapy treatment.3
